Standards and Ethics

As licensed clinical social workers we aim to enhance the mental health and well-being of  individuals and families who seek our services. In this role we follow the code of ethics of the National Association of Social Workers.  This document can be found both in English and Spanish by clicking on the following link: NASW Code of Ethics.

Our professional standards extend beyond the tenants of the NASW official Code and include requirements mandated by other organizations which play a role in the regulation and oversight of mental health providers in the US.  These include

  • The federal Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA ).  The primary goal of this law is to make it easier for people to keep health insurance, protect the confidentiality and security of healthcare information and help the healthcare industry control administrative costs.  In its latest outreach HIPAA is regulating the use of electronic media as a means of transmitting private health information.
  • Participation as non-physician mental health care providers in the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services’ Physician Quality Reporting System  as part of our efforts to improve the quality of mental health care we provide.
